Training Qualification
The Round Ireland Yacht Race is not a race for novices. Every crew member must have experience of sailing a yacht offshore and be prepared to encounter heavy weather. Competitors may be required to provide evidence of offshore experience before entering the race.
There are two certificates acceptable for the survival training:
- ISAF Offshore Safety Course – details of the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) / ISAF Offshore Safety Course & providers are available on their website.
- Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Survival Training - run in accordance with STCW 95. This course / providers are approved by Department of Transport. Details available on their website. This course is not as comprehensive as the ISAF Offshore Safety Course as it only covers how to abandon ship & what to do thereafter. The ISAF course concentrates on how to avoid having to do this!
The course we would recommend as the most appropriate First aid certificate for sailors is the ISA’s own Emergency Care Training Course.
Some Course Providers with suitable courses available:
- Oceanmaster Sail Training – Next courses on 21/22 April and 26/27 May
- Sailing West – Sail Training/mileage, ISAF Offshore Safety courses, etc
- Sea and Shore Safety – ISAF Offshore Safety courses etc
Please note that it is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure that the criteria are met and that a certificate or letter of attendance from an establishment recognised by the ISA/RORC should be provided.
